Dachshund Personality and History
Dachshunds are intelligent, determined, and can be quite willful. They’re often described as trying to train their owners! Originally bred for badger hunting in Germany, their body shape is perfect for digging.
These dogs are clever and confident but also stubborn and independent. They love human company and often try to “help” with chores. Crate training is recommended due to their playful, independent nature. Despite their small size, Dachshunds have a loud, deep bark. They tend to bond closely with one person and may show jealousy. Early socialization is key for a family-friendly Dachshund.
Fun Facts
There are three coat types (short, wirehaired, longhaired) and three sizes (standard, miniature, tall) of Dachshund, making them one of the most varied breeds.
Available Tests
- Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) DNA Test: Screens for genes linked to DM. Learn more.
- Hyperuricosuria (HUU) DNA Test: Screens for the mutated gene associated with HUU. Learn more.
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Cone-Rod Dystrophy 4/cord1: This eye disease causes gradual vision loss. While many types of PRA exist, this test focuses on the cord1-PRA/crd4 mutation found in multiple breeds. Not all dogs with two altered copies develop the disease, but they are at risk. Carriers with one altered copy won’t develop the disease but can pass it on. Age of onset varies widely. Learn more.
